Stories are often retold due to the storyteller. They might add more detail or add another part of the myth. Also myths may have had offensive material in them and people choose to leave things out. It is just like the Greek gods. The Romans changed them to support their warlike culture as shown below.  Some writers use the Roman names and some use the Greek names.  Some even use both.  In the books Edith Hamilton"s Mythology and Bullfinch's Mythology, they use both Roman and Greek names depending on the story.  Mythology is different also because the writers interpret Homer and Virgil differently. Also the readers interpret the story differently. Stories will always change no matter what their origin.
