Orpheus and Eurydice

The tragic story of two people

Story
Orpheus was the son of one of the Nine Muses and was the most skilled musician in the land. He was going to get married to Eurydice when a poisonous snake came bit her. She died slowly in Orpheus’s arms and he vowed to get her back. He searched for the entrance to the Underworld for many days when he found the entrance in the west. He went down to the Underworld bringing his light to the inhabitants of the Underworld. He moved even Hades’ cold heart with his music and Hades let Eurydice go as long as Orpheus did not look at her until they came out of the Underworld. As Orpheus and Eurydice were leaving the Underworld doubts began in Orpheus and as they saw the light of the world above, Orpheus turned around. He only saw Eurydice long enough to see her being taken back into the Underworld. He lived his life as a sad and miserable person. When the nymphs wanted him to play the lyre he did not consent and the nymphs tore him to pieces and threw the pieces into a river. The Muses looked for him and when they found him buried him below Mt Olympus.
